Conceived as an Entrance Song for Maundy Thursday, additional different verses were included for the Sundays of Lent so that a congregation could grow familiar with it. The refrain is intended to be strong, familiar and memorable. In addition to the uses above it has also been used as an acclamation during the reading of the St John Passion on Good Friday.

The original verses reflected the scripture readings and were written for each Sunday. For the second edition a simpler alternative was provided: a set of psalm verses which can be sung in unison or 4 parts. A psalm has been assigned for each Cycle with reference to the broad themes of A: Initiation, B: Covenant; C: Reconciliation. As many verses as needed to cover the procession are used and further verses could be added as needed.
