Psalms – L24

Introduction

This page directs to Responsorial Psalms based on the edition of the Lectionary published in 2024 and using the Abbey Psalms and Canticles – initially for use in England and Wales, and Scotland .

This project builds on the previous Common Psalms project where not only settings of the Common Responsorial Psalms were given but other settings of the same psalm found on Sundays etc.

The new project is more ambitious and seeks to provide for each psalms and canticle a setting of every Responsorial psalm in the Lectionary. It is based on the new edition of the Lectionary which uses the Abbey Psalms and Canticles as the source for the verse text. The new edition comes into use on 1st Sunday of Advent 2024.

  • Settings follow the Hebrew numbering given first in the Lectionary

Publication

Each Psalm is published as a single pdf document rather than each setting as an individual sheet. It is assumed that users will download the whole pdf but only print the necessary pages.

These settings may be freely downloaded, printed and used.

A contents page is given at beginning of each document. It lists the various responses and then the settings by day, beginning with Sundays and Solemnities.

Settings are given in order of response and then by verse or rank.

An asterisk * added to a setting number (97-1*) indicates that an arrangement is given for the setting for 2 C instruments. Such arrangements are generally provided for Sundays and Solemnities (etc.). The setting itself is numbered 97-1i. The psalm reference and day are not repeated for the setting with instruments — so allow some more space.

Where a psalm setting takes more than one side it is indicated by (cont.) in the right-hand margin. The response and psalm tone are repeated on the next side.

On some occasions the given response may be replace by ‘Alleluia’. Rather than provide this for each occasion an ‘Alleluia’ response together with psalm tone is provided at the end of the document. This might also be used as a simple Acclamation before the Gospel if required.

Settings

Following the model of the Common Psalms project there is a short ‘interlude’ after the psalm tone. This provided for settings for Sundays and Solemnities (etc.). For other days just the psalm tone is given.

An indented line indicates that previous line is run into the indented line — i.e. the two lines are sung to one bar of the psalm tone.

A double underline on a word — indicates that both of the passing notes (quaver or 8th notes) are sung on the single word or syllable.

How this page is arranged

Each psalm is entered twice:

  • by its psalm number (e.g. 103)
  • by its use on a liturgical day (e.g. Pentecost)

On the pages for the liturgical day links are made to any other relevant music.
